Garden Master Course

a master gardener program transformed

By Helen Atthowe

This isn't your average

master gardener program...

Master gardener programs have long been regarded as the paramount credential among horticulturists. However, they commonly stress the use of pesticides that have warning labels, which may not be ideal for the gardener or the environment. Helen's Garden Master Course goes above and beyond - teaching not only the fundamentals of a master gardener program, but also incorporating Fukuoka-style practices that she has been improving upon over the last few decades.

Most master gardener programs are extensions of the state universities and can focus on ornamentals and design. The goal of the Garden Master Course is to understand ecological functions and interactions within the plant, soil, microorganism, and insect communities.

Grow Beyond-Organic produce at any level.

The Garden Master course is a 35-hour video-based online course taught by Helen Atthowe, who is an expert in "beyond-organic" gardening. It offers comprehensive information on gardening and is considered to provide better insights than in-person university-funded master gardener programs. The advantage of this course is that it is more accessible and cost-effective compared to traditional master gardener programs.

The Garden Master Course teaches organic, veganic, and no-till permaculture gardening techniques. The course focuses on soil and habitat building for beneficial organisms, and emphasizes systems thinking for gardeners and farmers. It covers managing relationships in the garden, rather than just growing crops. The course provides in-depth knowledge and skills in sustainable gardening practices.

"...I no longer work for a university, so I can explore the limits of both organic and ecological thinking that I have explored over the last 40 years in my own farms..." - Helen Atthowe

 "I loved learning from Helen..."

"... she taught us basics of entomology, how to build healthy soil, gave me the courage to do experiments in my specific environment, and, honestly, so much more!"

"...it has deeply influenced my connection to the land..."

"I took the Garden Master Course online. It really opened me to new ways of thinking about soil health and the importance of no-till. I'm still in process with putting this into practice (partly due to some current physical limitations) but it has deeply influenced my connection to the land I live on and with. The need for reciprocity, for listening to the land without assuming a sort of colonizing "doing to" the land takes time to fully inhabit -- but I'm on the way!"
